The Muir Woods
I'm bound to butcher this story, but, it intrigued me so why not include it...
But, this dude John Muir (aka "Father of the National Parks") saw the redwood trees being cut down en-masse and recognized that without protection, the logging industry would clear-cut the forrests. So he organizes for the land to be purchased and gifted to the Federal Government to be used as a Natural Monument for preservation. Pretty cool guy.
